MCKEON Family History
This Irish surname which originated, it is claimed, in County Sligo, uses the Gaelic diminutive 'Eoghain', translating as 'Little Owen' or perhaps 'son of Owen' as its basic form. 'Owen' is in fact the Welsh form of the Hebrew John, and is believed to be first found in Ireland in the 7th Century A.D. when the early Christians arrived from Europe. The clan held important lands in the barony of Kiltartan, in County Galway in the 16th century. In fact area was at that time known as 'Termon Brian MacOwen'. The Irish clan name spellings are generally MacKeown, formerly MacEoghain, in Connacht, MacKeon, formerly MacEoin, in County Down, whilst in County Fermanagh to give another variation it was originally O'Ceothain, and is now O'Hone! The famous Irish etymologist Edward MacLysaght claimed that with 'Keon' the prefix O' and 'Mac' are interchangeable...Select Audience

Our haplogroup being R-M269/R-L20/R-U152, all three being interconnected and of the same bloodline. We are Gaels, not Welsh as the family history section on this site has it written. Nothing against the Welsh, but we are a separate people and race. We are descendants of the most well known royal Irish dynasty in Irish history ,Uรญ Nรฉill Dynasty (O'Neal)we even spread Northward into Northern and Northwest Scotland and likely absorbed Pictish dna after absorbing Pictish tribes with our own people over time. The dna in the Pictish areas has changed very little over the centuries due to being so remote in ancient times which prevented being mixed with Roman, Viking, Angle and Saxon dna. Our people ruled over various areas in Ireland from Ulster down to Cork and Ulster Eastward into Antrim/Rathlin Island and we're the High Kings of Ireland from the 7th to 11th centuries. I have read countless hours of documents pertaining to Cenรฉl nEogain and our various subclans and how we all descend from clan Uรญ Nรฉill and I have taken a dna test which confirms direct descent from Niall Noรญgรญallach. I've nothing against the Welsh at all, but we not Welsh, we are Gaels. Gaels with a long and rich history, some good and some bad, but this is who we are. Our ancestors were in nearly every area of Ireland North to South, East to West, with multiple castles and lands that we ruled and they would have spoken nearly every dialect of Irish Gaelic that existed from the time our people arrived in Ireland through modern times and they would have spoken various dialects of Scottish Gaelic natively as well. We are a broad and proud people and I hope some of what I posted helps someone else learn a little bit more about who they are and where their ancestors come from. john mckeon born 1821 parish Drumreilly. John was in 88th regiment of Connaught Rangers in 1850 ,He fought in Indian Revolt in 1857 . he moved to Middlesbrough UK in 1870 . He married Bridget McGowan in 1867. in drumkeeran manorhamilton . Johns father was Bernard Mckeon born around 1788. for some reason when John moved to UK he added an e to the name . Mckeone.
