Gr?obhtha" is associated with the Co. Clare family, whose surname was also anglicised as "O'Griffey" or "Griffey". "? Gr?obhtha" translates to English as "descendant of the Griffin-like". The "? Gr?f?n" spelling belongs to the Kerry family. In Ireland, the name can also be associated with the Norman surname "Griffith", but to a much lesser degree. My grandfather was Joseph Griffin, youngest brother Thomas. Their father also Joseph Griffin, married to Laura Deverson. They emigrated from the London area in the early 1900s to Manitoba, Canada.

G Grandmother, Bridget Griffin arrived in Tasmania via " Boomerang" in 1855 fare paid for by T. Mahoney. Bridget sailed from Liverpool as 19yo.

Griffin is a common name on or around the Dingle Peninsula now and, all Griffins from that area who have been tested for Y Haplgroups at FTDNA have been determined to descend from men who left the Scottish Highlands some time around the 15th century. If a male Griffin has DNA analysis done by 23andme, currently they will assign the Scottish Highlander Y haplogroup R-S764 to members of Kerry Ireland origin Griffins. FTDNA Y-37 or Y-111 may help you find Griffin male-line relatives. FTDNA Big Y-700 testing can provide much greater detail and possibly genealogical certainty but is more expensive.
